Welcome to the NEW 5th edition of the Curious Curator. We’ve been away for a couple of months as we were busy focusing on ensuring all of your lovely clients’ had a great time down here in Southern Africa over our high season. We are starting to go into our traditionally quiet time for stays, but it’s also the season which provides the best value for money, and the weather is just perfect (sunny, warm with blue skies) in the Kruger and The Drakensberg – albeit a bit chilly at night, and Cape Town still has a fantastic Mediterranean climate. So don’t be afraid to recommend Southern Africa in low season (May – September), your clients will love it!

USEFUL FACTS FROM SAT:
We joined South African Tourism last month for an update on the previous year and the year ahead and this is what they concluded. It’s worth noting that OTA’s/Bed Banks have lost market share year on year, so it highlights the massive opportunities that specialist tour operators have to sell South Africa and to take more market share:
- Total UK outbound travel to the world grew 3% in 2017 and is expected to grow at the same rate in the next 4 years
- Lead time (bookings days before actual flight date) – 58% of the bookings are made at least 3 months before the actual travel date
- During off peak, Brits tend to book slightly later than usual
- 43% of the bookings are made through Retail Travel Agency/Face to Face (5.4% growth from 2016)
- Online OTA lost share in 2017 and accounted for 22.5% from 23.5% in 2016
- Booking signs – There is enough interest shown on SA as a destination, as roughly in a year, a total of 630k pax are booked. The challenge is that many pax are either cancelled or partially cancelled (roughly 26% drop off completely)
- The main driver of travel to SA has always been VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives) but this has been dropping since 2014
- ‘To go on Safari’, experience SA’s different cultures and a need to explore their heritage in SA has grown
- ‘To see the natural scenery’ has always been the 2nd biggest driver of travel to SA
