Wow, where do I even start? Back in the late summer I had the amazing opportunity to stay at the Mosaic Private Sanctuary in Standford, Hermanus for 2 nights with my partner and another couple. If beautiful nature, sunsets, peaceful surroundings and pure serenity is what you are craving, Mosaic is the place to find the combination of these bound together to satisfy just what the body and soul needs. REST! I’ve been to Hermanus on a few occasions before, but this was a totally new experience.
We stayed there for the whole weekend, and whilst we were still in winter, Cape Town was rainy and dull, but in Hermanus we were enjoying the warmth of the sun on our skin, sunning ourselves by the beautiful lagoon which Mosaic Sanctuary cottages are situated on. If it had have rained, we would still have had a fabulous time, as there are huge fire places inside each cottage stacked with wood and cleaned daily by the superb staff. Since it was great weather, we decided to braai and have drinks around the outside fire place. During the day we did some kayaking on the serene waters of the lagoon and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings which I think really shows off the beauty of Mosaic. Personally I think summer time would be the best time to visit this hidden jewel, but you certainly wouldn’t be disappointed visiting in any other season.
We took a 4WD transfer to the 10km stretch of gravel road to Mosaic, as my parents had found it quite bumpy, due to the heavy rainfall, when they visited last year, however, we were pleasantly surprised that they had fixed the gravel road, so we had a lovely smooth arrival. I would still recommend taking a bigger vehicle especially if the family is travelling with children, as the drive is about 2 hours and it would be more comfortable for a longer trip. The directions we got from Google took us straight to the property with no issues at all.
There are two sections to Mosaic – one being self catering cottages, and two being the lodge rooms which include breakfast and activities. Guests need to be clear of which section they have booked, as each option has a separate entrance and if you pass your lodge you will have to drive back again.

I’ve tried hard to think of a ‘wow’ factor of Mosaic, but to be honest my entire weekend at Mosaic was out of this world. I’ve been lucky enough to stay at many properties before, but Mosaic surprisingly topped my expectations. From the staff, to the beautiful cottages and the service. The surprise to me is that very few people know about this beautiful hidden treasure in the most amazing location, so visit now before word gets out!
