Self-Driving
You can, of course, take a self-drive tour in South Africa at virtually any time of year but there are certain months favoured by many in the know. If you are heading for the Cape, for example, you will find the winter months, as well as spring and autumn are the ideal time for your trip. You could, for example, spend a few days in Cape Town and then head off along the world famous Garden Route towards Port Elizabeth, perhaps stopping off along the way at some of the super seaside towns you will pass and, if you are there between about August and November, you have a perfect opportunity to spot some of the whales frolicking along the coastline here. Alternatively pick up a car in Durban and head for the beautiful Drakensberg mountains or start your journey in Johannesburg, from where it is easy to drive to the fabulous Kruger Park for some of the best game watching to be found anywhere.

Escorted Touring
Join an escorted tour and you can have fun exploring South Africa at any time of the year. You will have no need to worry about which route to take or where you will be staying, your expert guide or driver/guide will have it all under control. The only time you may like to avoid is the height of summer, unless, of course, you are used to the heat. In which case you will be right in your element.

Beach Resort Holidays
If you are looking for excellent weather in the Cape Town area or any of the centres around the Eastern Cape, plan to visit between any time between October and April. Remember, though, that the area can get very busy around Christmas time and at New Year, when many South Africans choose to take their own holidays. If you are thinking of visiting KwaZulu-Natal it's best to avoid December, January and February. Not only is it a very popular holiday spot for South Africans but it can also get very hot.

Safaris
Generally the period between May and September is the best time to take a safari in South Africa. The only exception is in the Eastern Cape, when you can go on safari at any time of year.

Walking Tours and Trekking
Few countries are so perfect for exploring on foot as South Africa, whether you choose to walk along the stunningly beautiful coasts or up among the craggy granite outcrops of the Drakensberg mountains. You can go almost any time of year, though it may be best to avoid the coast during high summer and head for the hills instead. Remember, too, that some escorted tours do not operate over the Christmas and New Year periods or at Easter.
